How to turn an image into a cookie cutter STL

CookieCut converts a picture into a ready-to-print 3D cookie cutter. The whole process takes four steps and needs no CAD software.

1. Upload and trace

Add a PNG, JPG, WebP or BMP image. Simple shapes with clear contrast between the subject and the background work best: silhouettes, icons, logos and drawings. CookieCut finds the outline automatically. If a part is missing, such as an ear or a tail, use Add; to remove background that was picked up, use Remove. Every edit can be undone.

2. Set the size

Choose the width of the cutter. Most cookie cutters are between 60 and 100 mm, and 70–80 mm fits comfortably in most hands and on most baking sheets. Keep proportions on to scale the height automatically.

3. Generate the 3D model

CookieCut builds a cutter with a wide flange for pressing, a straight wall and a tapered cutting edge. The 3D preview lets you rotate and inspect the result before downloading.

4. Download and print

Download the model as STL (works with every slicer), 3MF or STEP. Then slice and print it on any FDM printer.

Recommended print settings

  • Nozzle: 0.4 mm. The default wall is 1.2 mm, which is three clean perimeters.
  • Orientation: print with the flange on the build plate and the cutting edge facing up. No supports are needed.
  • Layer height: 0.12–0.2 mm. Finer layers give a smoother edge.
  • Walls and infill: use at least 3 perimeters; the thin walls are mostly solid anyway.
  • Size: the cutter is 16 mm tall overall, deep enough to cut rolled dough cleanly.
